IES Officer Salary (Basic Pay) Structure

A person serving as an IES Officer can fall into a variety of categories, with regular promotions as shown in the chart below. In-Hand Salary

IES Officer Allowances

The following are the various allowances to which an IES officer is entitled: –

  2. The HRA is determined by the city in which the officer will be stationed, with Class A Cities (Metropolis) receiving 30% of the Basic Pay, Class B Cities (Big Cities) receiving 20% of the Basic Pay, and Class C Cities (Smaller Cities, Towns, and Villages) receiving 10% of the Basic Pay.
  3. Dearness Allowance, based on inflation rates, to meet the Officer’s daily household needs.
  4. As an extra incentive, leave a Travel Allowance/ Tour Allowance.

Probation Period

Candidates hired through UPSC ESE for the Indian Railways are required to undergo 18 months of training. They are educated at the Indian Railways National Academy (NAIR). The entire training time is broken down into sections. The training starts with a general introduction and concludes with an attachment to the relevant Ministry.

IES officer Recruitment Process

For an IES Officer, there are three steps of recruitment: –

  1. The Preliminary Exam.
  2. The Mains Exam.

Preliminary Exam

The preliminary exam (also known as the Prelims) is divided into two sections:

Interview (Personality Test)

The interview is more concerned with the candidate’s personality than with his or her technical skills. It is worth 200 points, and the candidate is chosen on the basis of the candidate’s total performance in the written tests and the interview.

Career Growth, Opportunities and Promotions

  • As an Assistant Executive Engineer or Assistant Director, the candidate is chosen first.
  • After 3-4 years of service, he is eligible for promotion to Executive Engineer or Director. However, depending on the candidate’s performance throughout service, this time frame may change.
  • After about 13 years of service, he or she is eligible for promotion to Joint General Manager or Level 2 Chief Engineer.
  • After approximately 20 years of service, you may be promoted to Chief Engineer or AGM (Additional General Manager).
  • After 30 years of service, the officer is now qualified to become a Senior General Manager.
  • The officer will receive the final promotion after 34 years of service when he or she would be promoted to Managing Director or Chairperson.
