PhD in Medicine: Benefits and Scope

  • A PhD in Medicine in India is an excellent course to pursue if you want to pursue a career as a researcher or a biomedical scientist. To succeed in a specialty of your choice, you must spend three years honing your skills and increasing your mastery in research.
  • You are more likely to gain international recognition if you complete a PhD after an MS or a PhD after an MD. This means that your career path will broaden and you will be able to work in countries other than India. Hospitals, research centers, pharmaceutical centers, and biomedical organisations are more likely to believe in your abilities once you have completed your PhD in Medical Sciences and entered a specialty of your choice.
  • During your MD program, you develop clinical skills. Instead of researching, you’ll be better equipped to diagnose patients. PhD, on the other hand, has more to offer. Lab techniques and other skills, such as applying for grant money, are available thanks to research-oriented thinking and knowledge.
  • Income is one of the sub-aspects of career advancement. In research, an MD is unlikely to earn as much as a PhD candidate in Medicine. When you specialize in a field for three years and gain experience in clinical research, you automatically become more appealing to clinical research centers. When compared to an MD professional, this means that your income increases as well.

FAQs

What does a doctorate in medicine entail?

The MD–PhD is a dual doctoral degree for physician–scientists that combines the professional training of a Doctor of Medicine degree with the research expertise of a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

How do you get a doctoral degree in medicine?

Complete your MD training before moving on to a fellowship program to conduct more in-depth research. Complete your MD training before returning to graduate school to pursue a PhD.

How long does it take to get a doctorate in medicine?

A PhD is typically lab-based and lasts at least three years, whereas an MD lasts two to three years and combines a student’s research findings with clinical practice. At the end of the course, a student must submit a thesis or a portfolio of published work for both qualifications.

Is it possible for a doctor with a doctorate in surgery to perform surgery?

Traditionally, MD or PhD graduates do not enter surgery, and many programs discourage students from doing so, but this does not rule out surgery as a viable career option.

Is a PhD in medicine worth it?

An MD/PhD does not automatically put someone “ahead” of a physician with only an MD rather, an MD/PhD leads to a more research-focused career. As a result, the question isn’t which degree is more valuable, but rather what type of work you want to do as a trained physician.

Is there a minimum age requirement for a PhD?

No, there is no upper age limit for a PhD, but a Junior Research Fellow (J.R.F) must be at least 28 years old.

Is it better to be an M.B.B.S or an MD?

Students in India begin with an M.B.B.S degree. Its completion indicates the level of education required to become a licensed physician. A MD degree is a higher level of post-graduate education in specialty training. Medical graduates with an M.B.B.S degree are the only ones who can pursue an MD degree.
