IIT JAM 2024 Exam Pattern: The examination of IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) is going to be conducted through online mode which is CBT mode for all the seven test papers. The test will be conducted within a time limit of 3 hours and its medium will be English only. The mock test paper is also released for each paper by the authorities. This examination is organized every year by the institute in 7 subjects in February. Those candidates who take this exam are preparing for admission in IITs, and NITs for MSc courses. IIT JAM Exam Pattern 2024

There will be a total of 7 test papers included in the IIT JAM. The exam will be conducted in February 2024 by the authority will conduct it by the online mode the Computer Based Test. The medium of the question paper is English only and the time limit for the exam is 3 hours. Also, there will be 3 sections in the question paper that are Sections A B and C. IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section A

  • Mode of examination- Online (CBT)
  • Nature of questions- Objective types (MCQs)
  • A number of questions- There will be a total of 30 questions from which 10 questions will carry one mark each and 20 questions will carry two marks each. There will be 4 options for each question, only one option is correct.
  • Medium of examination- The question paper will be in English only at all exam centers.
  • Marking scheme- The questions will be of 1 or 2 marks
  • Negative marking- For questions containing 1 and 2 marks, 1/3 marks and 2/3 marks will be deducted for wrong answers respectively. Check IIT JAM Admit Card.

  • Mode of examination- Online (CBT)
  • Nature of questions- MSQs type questions (Multiple Select Questions). There will be one or more than one correct option among the given four options.
  • Number of questions- There are only 10 questions.
  • Medium of examination- The question paper will be in English only at all exam centres.
  • Marking scheme- The candidates will be awarded full marks only if they choose all the correct options. It will not be valid if any of the selected options are wrong.
  • Negative marking- No negative marking or partial marking for this section.

IIT JAM Exam Pattern Section C

  • Mode of examination- Online (CBT)
  • Nature of questions- Under this Section NAT type of questions will be framed which is Numerical Answer Type. The candidates have to select the virtual numeric keypad from the monitor as the answers will be signed real numbers.
  • Number of questions- There will be a total of 20 questions from which 10 questions will carry one mark each and 10 questions will carry two marks each. 
  • Medium of examination- The question paper will be in English only at all exam centres.
  • Marking scheme- For every correct answer, the candidates will be awarded 2 marks.
  • Negative marking- No negative marking or partial marking in the section.

There will be a total of 60 questions in each paper separately of the IIT JAM. The questions will be divided into three different sections. Each section carries 100 marks. IIT JAM 2024 Exam Day Instructions

  • It is prohibited to bring any electronic device such as a mobile phone inside the examination hall.
  • Tables, charts, and graphs sheets are prohibited inside the examination hall.
  • The authorities will provide a scribble pad for work that must be returned to the authority after the examination.
  • The candidates can select the answers for MCQs and MSQs type questions while they have to enter the answers for the NAT section. It is necessary to use a virtual numeric keypad with the help of the mouse.
  • After 3 hours of the examination, the computer will automatically close the exam.
  • Any type of malpractice or unfair means used by the candidates in JAM 2024 if declared at the time of examination or any other stage may lead to candidature canceling and disqualification from appearing in the IIT JAM examination forever.

IIT JAM 2024 Exam Pattern FAQ’S

What is the marking scheme of NAT questions in IIT JAM 2023?

In Section C (NAT) there are 20 questions. 10 out of the 20 questions are of one mark and the rest are of two marks.

After the removal of the Biological Sciences paper which new paper has been introduced in IIT JAM?

In IIT JAM 2023, a new paper that is Economics (EN) is added. The exam pattern of the Economics paper is similar to the other papers and students with an Economics background can apply for this pattern.

Is there any negative marking in IIT JAM 2023?

Yes, the marking scheme of IIT JAM 2023 contains negative marking which is only applicable to MCQ questions. According to the marking scheme, 1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer with a weightage of 1 marks. While 2/ 3 marks will be deducted for wrong answers with the weightage of 2 marks. Negative marking does not apply to unattempted questions and MSQ and NAT sections.

Are there any changes in IIT JAM 2023 marking scheme?

No, there are no significant changes brought in the marking scheme of IIT JAM 2023. Similar to the previous years marking scheme negative marking applicable to Section an only for every wrong answer perforations with the weightage of 1 mark. The marks that will be deducted is 1/3. Also for each question with the weightage of 2 marks 2/3 marks will be deducted. For questions that remain unattempted, no marks will be deducted
